When the sign was painted on the west wall of the building at 17 York Street, the building next door was only two storeys tall. The surviving incarnation of the sign advertising Joseph Grant Wholesale and Clover Leaf Tea was painted during or before the year 1911. The sign can best be seen from atop the York Street stairs but most of the sign's words are blocked by nearer buildings. Hopefully, taking photographs near the American embassy will not cause concerns.

For decades, Joseph Grant ran a grocers wholesaler on York Street in the Byward Market. Mr Grant retired in 1934. He died in 1957.
