Polk’s Corps Plaque - Chickamauga National Battlefield - Specific Veteran Memorials on Waymarking.com

This plaque is dedicated to Polk’s Corps, commanded by Lieut. Gen. Leonidas Polk in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 19, 1863. This is one of two monuments to Polk's Corps on the battlefield.

To reach this monument:
Park on Alexander Bridge Road. A path runs east from near the plaques to Breckinridge’s Division (CSA) & 92nd Ohio (USA). Follow this path east. A path running north to Reed's Bridge Road will intersect this path at the Brig. Gen. Benjamin H. Heim headquarters monument. Continue pasted the monument along the same path, crossing a small creek to the monument.



Text on the plaque reads:

Polk’s Corps.
Lieut. Gen. Leonidas Polk
Sept. 20, 1863

Cheatham’s Division	Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Cheatham.
Hindman’s Division	Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Hindman.

The divisions of this corps were separated during the battle of the second day. Cheatham’s division was attached to the right wing and posted to the right and rear of Breckinridge’s division in reserve. A part of it became engaged during the afternoon on the right of Cleburne’s division. Hindman was in the front line of the left of Bushrod R. Johnson, being the left division of the left wing. He advanced soon after 11 A.M., on Sheridan’s and Davis’s divisions, pushed them crossed the Crawfish Springs road, and pursued them to the crest of the high ground west of that road. Hindman then joined Bushrod R. Johnson’s division at the Vittetoe house and took part in the assaults on Snodgrass Hill.
