The cemetery was opened by Hoyland Nether Urban District Council in 1935 after the local St. Peter Church graveyard extension was full. The cemetery was taken over by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974 under the local council reorganisations.

The main entrance is from Kirk Balk with a footpath gate a short way along on the same road. There is a further footpath entrance from Hawshaw Lane.
The cemetery is in use with plenty of unused space. There are some CWGC graves from both world wars in the CE and NC sections. A large area adjacent to the old chapel has been used for the resting place for cremations with name stones etc.
