Toby Winning runs the annual Little Crosby Folk Festival. The day after he announces that the Festival is moving to London next year he is found drowned face down in a bowl of elvers and eggs. The murder appears to be linked to the song “The Ballad of Midsomer County” written by the late Johnny Carver. Johnny had committed suicide and the song had gone missing, until recently when Toby’s estranged wife, Alice, sang the song on her album. Alice’s fingerprints are on the bowl. She admits to trying to get back together with Toby, but denies murder.

Phone records show Toby was called from a phone box near to the late Johnny Carver’s house. Toby’s lap top is also missing. Johnny’s house has lain derelict since his death. It is now owned by Danny Carver, who provides the sound gear for the festival and has a daughter Melody who sings at the festival.

Toby’s moving the festival is going to cause a lot of hardship to locals. Hardest hit will be Danny Carver, Tom and Claire Asher who own the George Hotel where concert goers stay, and Frank Wainwright who hosts the festival at his pub the Captain Farrell. The move appears to have been instigated by Brian Grey, Toby’s business partner. Brian manages to find Toby’s laptop and agrees to meet someone with it. At the meeting Brian is killed by an amplifier tower and has roses stuffed into his mouth, another link to the ballad.

Danny makes his first trip to Johnny’s cottage in 25 years. He hopes to retrieve a tape made of the Ballad by Johnny. It was hidden under the floor boards, but is now missing. Danny knows Frank knew about the tape, but Frank denies taking it. He does, however, confess that he has been sheltering Heather, Danny’s wife. Heather left Danny and Melody when Melody was young, and wants to return home. The riddle of the missing tape is resolved when Nelson finds that Toby gave Melody recording time in exchange for the tape. Barnaby now realises that there may be more to the tape than music. In the meanwhile Frank is found dead, impaled by a sun umbrella.

Nelson follows a hunch and has forensics examine Johnny’s cottage. His hunch is that Johnny was murdered and that his murder is on the tape. Forensics show that Johnny was shot from a distance and was thus murdered. Meanwhile, it is revealed that whilst Melody is Heather’s daughter, she is not Danny’s daughter. Heather had an affair with Johnny and he was Melody’s dad. Johnny was apparently a ladies man.

Tom and Claire Asher’s marriage is flaky. Tom finds out that Claire is planning a trip abroad. Claire goes missing and turns up at Johnny’s cottage. Tom is waiting there with a shotgun. Tom blamed the moving of the festival as the reason for his wife’s wanting to leave and sought revenge.
