The Falstaff brewery in downtown New Orleans has been a local landmark for nearly 100 years. It's tall tower with bright neon letters is a National Geodetic Survey benchmark.
The Falstaff brewing company began in St. Louis Missouri in 1838. Even as late as the mid-1960s Falstaff beer was very popular in the United States.
Falstaff expanded greatly after prohibition ended in 1933, buying several worries outside of St. Louis, including this brewery building (formerly owned by the National Brewing Company) in New Orleans.
However, changes and consolidations in the macro-brewing industry led to the decline of the iconic Falstaff brand, and in 2005 the last Falstaff beer rolled off the bottling line.
The New Orleans Falstaff brewery closed in 1979, and was vacant for decades. Today (2014) this landmark building, with its beautiful industrial details is being used as a rental beer garden for private parties. Other parts of this historic building are being converted into downtown loft apartments.
