The Notre Dame de Niort is presented as a masterpiece of the fifteenth century. It replaced an earlier church Sainte-Marie, which itself had replaced a small pre-Romanesque church.
According to an inscription on the outside wall of the church, construction of Notre Dame have begun in 1491, that is to say, in the decades of economic revival that followed the end of the Hundred Years War (1453). The building, completed in 1534, is flamboyant Gothic style in effect at the end of the Middle Ages. The additions of the nineteenth century follow this style of architecture, including the magnificent pulpit.
Our Lady of Niort has a flat bed. On the ground, the surface is rectangular. Transept, very shallow, supports, south, 75m high tower. The choir is illuminated by a large stained glass window, a Tree of Jesse that dates also the fifteenth century. Very damaged, it was restored around 1990.
