To avoid confusion, the proper spelling has been used in the following.

The top plaque says:

FIRST TRADING POST
IN SHELL KNOB
By Henry Schell
Sesquicentennial
1835 - 1985

The etched front of the granite (with too many apostrophes):

SHELL KNOB TAKES ITS NAME
FROM HENRY SCHELL WHO
ESTABLISHED A HOMESTEAD
NEAR THE FOOT OF SHELL
KNOB MOUNTAIN IN THE
1830s.
THE HOMESTEAD SITE IS
BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN
ABOUT 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF
THIS LOCATION

Note that the spelling of Henry's name is correct. Writers of the day, and/or perhaps the US Post Office, dropped the C from the hill and town bearing his name. Henry and his family moved to eastern McDonald County and founded the (now near ghost) town of Jacket, which still has some remnants of its existence. Henry was murdered there during the US Civil War and is buried in a single grave on private property at Jacket.
