In Atonement, Briony, a young girl makes an accusation of rape against a family friend who she claims assaulted her cousin. But she was never certain if that was true. Later as she comes to realize that she was clearly wrong, she decides to atone after so much damage has been done.
In 1999, at age 77, she visits the Imperial War Museum's Reading Room to make a donation of letters from the War. She also returns books she has been using as reference for the book she is writing. She ruminates over the knowledge that she has dementia. Note that the Museum is the former Bethlem Royal Hospital better known to us as Bedlam- a hospital for the mentally ill.
