The Wellington Community Clock was originally put up in Market Square as part of the Millennium celebrations in January 2000. It cost £10,000 and was partly paid for by public subscription.
A great many individuals contributed towards the clock and so it belongs to the whole community. It has become an icon for the market town of Wellington, appearing on brochures and publicity.
The clock was removed and relocated during the building of the new Civic and Leisure Centre. This was met with community uproar and petitions to have the clock returned to its original site in Market Square. The clock is now back in Market Square after being returned and unveiled in October 2011.
