Marker Name: Inflated Lavas
Marker Text: These vertical lava rock outcrops were created through a geological process known as “inflation.”
When lava from Mt. Bachelor spread over relatively flat ground, the surface cooled and hardened to rock. The horizontal movement of the lava flow stopped but the hot lava within the flow was forced to expand vertically like a giant loaf of leaven bread.
The lava flow inflated as high as 70 feet in some places.
