Devil's Pulpit is a narrow limestone pillar and is named as such because the 'pulpit' in legend was used by the devil to cajole the monks who were working below; trying to persuade them to join him.
Thomas Roscoe writes the below in 'Wanderings in South Wales' from 1836:
“On the opposite bank of the river, an ancient entrenchment runs some distance along the ridge of the hill, and one angle, commanding a splendid view of Tintern and the fair vale around it, is dignified by the appellation of the ‘Devil’s Pulpit’.”
The view used to be more open that it is today but the Forestry Commission keep it clear.
I have always wanted to walk on the Offa's Dyke Path and discovered this viewpoint on an impulsive visit to Tiddenham Park. Take your GPS or a map and compass as I did and get back to basics.
