The tunnel is 630 yards long and was used between 1873 and 1965. It runs from Kerne Bridge in the north to Lydbrook in the south with the winding loop of the River Wye hugging its portals. There is a slight righthand bend from north to south temporarily distorting the light at the end.
Inside the tunnel the walls are stone faced and the roof lined in brick. The southern end floods from water coming through the roof but the remainder is dry and in good condition.
