Baptism Font in St John the Baptist's church, Cranford
The font is of the 14th century, with a plain octagonal bowl moulded on the under side; it has a flat 17th century cover.
"The guide to St. John’s church compiled in 1984 records that the fonts C17th cover had become unusable and had been replaced by a modern one made from an old altar. No date is given for this, but another pamphlet ‘Some Ancient Buildings of Interest in Cranford’ written about 1960 describes the cover as being C17th at that time. The 1631 Church Visitation records ‘the cover of the fonte is broken and insufficient’ and it would be interesting to know whether it was replaced at that time, or whether the situation was long standing."
