This station, a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, is located in New Milford, CT, along the Housatonic Railroad. It is set in a large rock ledge outcrop off the east side of the railway bed:

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 3.3 MI S FROM GAYLORDSVILLE. 0.8 MILE NORTH ALONG THE NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD FROM BOARDMANS BRIDGE, LITCHFIELD COUNTY, 3.3 MILES SOUTH OF GAYLORDSVILLE, 200 FEET NORTH OF CROSSING 48.24, 120 FEET EAST OF THE EAST RAIL, 33 FEET NORTH OF A STREAM, 7 FEET NORTH OF A 16-INCH HICKORY TREE, IN THE SOUTH END OF A 7-BY 20-FOOT ROCK LEDGE, AND 8 FEET HIGHER THAN THE RAIL. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED V 15 1935.

A couple changes have taken place here since the original description. First, the road that crossed the tracks at mile 48.24 used to serve a sawmill just east from the tracks. The sawmill is long gone, all that remains is a couple of rock foundations and a dam. The road has been blocked off at River Road with large boulders just west of the tracks. Crossing 48.24 no longer exists. The blocked off end of Sawmill rd is 0.5-mi north from the railroad grade crossing at River Rd. Second, the 16 inch hickory tree is now a rotten stump.

When looking eastward at the general area from the tracks, you will notice a 2-ft square box shaped opening in the ledge outcrop near the ground surface. Directly above that opening is where the disk is set. See the photo for more detail.

Use extreme caution when crossing the railroad track, it is active.

When recovering this mark, please consider logging it on both this site and the Geocaching site. Thank you.
