On the 21st of October 1793 one Nicholas Blannin requested that the Monmouthshire Canal Company should build a railway from a piece of land called Clomendy, on the Monmouthshire Canal, to his works, the Caerleon Iron Forge and Stone Quarries, but they refused. So in pursuance of a section of the Monmouthshire Canal Act of 1792 he built it himself and it was probably complete in 1794. The line did not end at his works but continued to the river in Caerleon where he also built a wharfe, quay and other works.
According to a brass plaque placed near the milepost on the endowed school front wall:-
This marker of the Caerleon Tramway was found
in the Afon Lwyd near Llantarnam Abbey
and was given to the
Caerleon and District Local History Society
by the Mother General of that Abbey.
Restored and set up by members
of the above Society
with the co-operation of the School Governors.
November 1977.
The post is about 0.75m high and is inscribed:-
