This plaque is dedicated to 1st Michigan Light Artillery, Battery D, commanded by Capt. Josiah W. Church in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863. There are six monuments to 1st Michigan Light Artillery, Battery D, on the battlefield.





Text on the plaque reads:
Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery.
Two 10-PDR. Parrots, Two James, Two 12-PDR Howitzers.
Connell’s Brigade, Brennan’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
September 20, 1863.

Capt. Josiah W. Church, Commanding (Slightly Wounded).
1st Lieut. Henry B. Corbin.
1st Lieut. Edward S. Wheat.
2nd Lieut. Daniel W. Sawyer.
2nd Lieut. Jesse B. Fuller.


The battery moved from the Dyer field midnight and came into position on this ground about 9 A. M. in center of brigade front line, in was in this position in the Confederate advance took place about 11 A. M. The enemy getting very near, the pieces were fired double shotted with canister, checking him till four pieces were run into the rear 50 yards. Three pieces were abandoned and three were limbered up and moved to the hill in the northwest end of Dyer Farm with the reserve artillery. The enemy pressing hard on front and right flank of position, two more pieces were abandoned, and the remainder of the battery moved to the rear on the McFarland’s Gap Road. Casualties: 1 officer and 6 men wounded; 4 men missing: guns lost 5: limbers 4: horses killed 35.
