The window has a descriptive, information board which reads:

'The Story behind the Millenium Window

This window in the east wall of Goodrich Castle chapel was donated by the parishioners of Goodrich, Marstow and Welsh Bicknor to commemorate the start of the third Millennium.

In the autumn of 1998, parishioners were asked for ideas that would appropriately mark the new Millenium. From a variety of suggestions the idea of a stained glass window was chosen because it would fulfil two objectives: the combination of the secular and spiritual side of life in the community and the contribution of an item of beauty to a building that has been integral to the three parishes for centuries.

Herefordshire artist Nicola Hopwood was chosen to create a design that would incorporate ideas from individual parishioners as well as local primary school children. Representatives from organisations across the three parishes formed a committee and worked tirelessly for eighteen months to raise the finance needed which was achieved through rund raising and private donations.

Finally, on 10th June 2000, the Bishop of Hereford dedicated the window at an open-air concert arranged to mark the occasion. It is to be hoped that the window will be enjoyed, and appreciated throughout future centuries.

Artist's Statement:

The window celebrates this place and its people: past, present and future.

The rock upon which the castle stands, the river flowing in great loops embracing three communities and the lush, timeless landscape bisected by road and river crossing are all reflected within the design.

Since 1300 AD the castle chapel has been a site of Christian worship and the window seeks to emphasise the sense of spirituality within it. "Upon this rock I will build my church" are the words of Christ from St. Matthew's gospel, offering a link between the chapel and the three churches of Goodrich, Marstow and Welsh Bicknor. Three faces, a man, woman and child emerge from the rock in communion with each other.

Pictures by local children sparkle in the river like sunlight on water during its continuous journey. One more generation is passing through.

The window is made of the finest English mouth-blown stained glass, with details etched and painted and assembled with lead - techniques used by artists and craftsmen for the past thousand years.
