In Chapter 21 on George Eliot's novel, Middlemarch, Dorothea is on her honeymoon with Mr. Casaubon. While Mr. Casaubon is about to do his studies at the Vatican Library and Museum, he and Dorothea realize they have a misunderstanding. Dorothea expected to be helping her husband in his intellectual pursuits. She comes to realize that he has no such intention....causing her to question the entire vision she had of their marriage. After Casaubon leaves, and she is alone in her despair, Casaubon's second cousin, Will, and Will's artist friend notice her. Will, is also an artist who just happened to be at the Vatican without knowledge that Casaubon would also be there on his honeymoon with Dorothea.
