Located within Eugene Masonic Cemetery, Eugene's oldest cemetery, is this zinc headstone for The Hudson family. Tragically, George and Viola Hudson lost two daughters who are both buried here with them. George passed away just months after his daughter Ella passed. Unfortunately, the name plate for Georgia Hudson is missing. George's name plate reads:
GEO. A. HUDSON
BORN APRIL 18, 1851.
DIED DEC. 28, 1884
I SHALL KNOW THE LOVED I HAVE GONE BEFORE,
AND JOYFULLY SWEET WILL THE MEETING BE,
WHEN OVER THE RIVER, THE PEACEFUL RIVER,
THE ANGEL OF DEATH SHALL CARRY ME.
Viola remarried after losing her husband and two young daughters and moved to Seattle. Her name plate reads:
MRS. VIOLA
McCLANAHAN
BORN APRIL 19, 1857
DIED SEPT. 2, 1920.
Georgia's name plate is missing and FindaGrave.com mentions that she died in Lathem, Lane County, of typhoid fever. Georgia was aged 1 year, 11 months and 21 days. The other daughter, Ella, has a name plate that reads:
ELLA L.
DAUGHTER OF
VIOLA & GEO. A. HUDSON
DIED
JULY 24, 1884.
AGED 5 YEARS 3 MOS. & 17 DYS.
THIS LOVELY BUD - SO YOUNG, SO FAIR,
CALLED HENCE BY EARLY DOOM,
JUST CAME TO SHOW HOW SWEET A FLOWER,
IN PARADISE WOULD BLOOM.
