In the early 1800's the town that was to become Streator was a coal mining settlement. In 1865 there were possibly 30 or 40 Catholic families living here.
When the number of Catholic families increased, about 30 German families desired to have a parish where they could be ministered in their native language.
The parish was founded in 1881 to serve the German Catholic families living in the Streator area. The first church was built in 1882, and was destroyed by fire on January 21, 1883. In August 1887, Fr. Dominic Meier, O.F. M. came to serve as pastor. Then another disaster struck: the second church was completely destroyed by fire in December, 1893. After five years of holding services in the school basement, a new church was built.
In January, 1897, Fr. Dominic Meier called a meeting to announce the building fund had reached the amount required by diocesan statutes for the planning and construction of the new church.
Bishop John L. Spalding gave his consent and appointed as architect Mr. George Studehaar of Rock Island, Illinois. The design for the new front was drawn by Very Reverend Peter Baptist Englert, O.F.M., then Provincial of the order. The contract was awarded to Mr. George A. Schmid, builder and contractor, and a parish member. Excavation for the new building was begun March, 1897.
On May 16, 1897, Bishop John Spalding solemnly blessed and laid the cornerstone. It was set in place by Frank Borghoff.
