Remarks:
"Alvin P. Hovey (1821-1891), was a general in the 244th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and a governor of Indiana. The monument cost $6,000, and was paid for by Hovey's daughter and son, Mrs. Menzies, and C. J. Hovey. John Walsh designed and built the monument, assisted by Ira Nye of C. P. Hiskey's Marble Works. The foundation was laid a year before the monument was installed, to allow it to settle so that it would sustain the memorial's weight." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum
