South San Francisco is not known as a tourist destination, but a key landmark of the city is visible to anyone who travels along the San Francisco Peninsula or travels through the nearby San Francisco International Airport. Sign Hill, near San Bruno Mountain, has huge letters on its side which read: "SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY". The words were first painted on the hill in 1923 to advertise the city. In 1928 the 60' high letters were cast in concrete, and sitting flush with the hillside, are essentially the same today.
Early industries in South San Francisco were meat packing, steel, ship building, bricks, paint, and lumber. There are two entrances to the park on the south and the west sides. The west side has a small parking area; the trail from this lot starts as a paved access road and changes to a dirt trail. On the south side, parking on city streets leads directly to dirt trails up the hillside.
