The "Twelve Apostles" are several close-by limestone stacks created by erosion from the waves. The coastline in this region is mainly made of Port Campbell limestone, which is about 15-20 million years old. However, the impressing coastal rock formations have been formed in only about 6000 years, the time interval with today's sea level.
The Port Campbell limestone of the cliffs is generally very soft, and thus can be formed by the sea quite easily, but has also a nonuniform density distribution. Typically, the upper layers are harder than the lower ones. Thus, first caves are eroded into the cliffs. After that, these become stone arches that later on collapse to form such stacks.
Of course, erosion does not stop at the current stage, so that the present stacks will also collapse at some time. This happened to one of the Apostles in 2005, so that now only eight of them are left. On the other hand, new rock stacks and other formations can be carved out from the cliffs in the future.
The coordinates point to a viewpoint near the parking.
