The equally spectacular and controversial monumental buildings of the new Federal Chancellery was designed by Berlin architects Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank in the tenure of Chancellor Helmut Kohl (1982-1998).

After the groundbreaking ceremony on 4 February 1997 and nearly four years of construction, the building could be obtained from the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder on 2 May 2001, whereby the government's move to Berlin was completed. The developed land is large with helipad and Chancellor Park around 7,000 m².

With a height of 36 meters, the building exceed the Berlin eaves height of 22 meters and is the largest government headquarters in the world.
The building has a modern, largely glazed outer surface and numerous stylistic elements of postmodernism. Extensively used colors have their own well-defined symbol effects. In the courtyard, which is formed from the pipeline and the two office wings, the sculpture of the Berlin Basque artist Eduardo Chillida and four columns each with tree planting is, flagpoles and in front of the main entrance to an overarching tent roof.
