A little pice of the darker aspects of the Auckland History. On July the 10th 1985 the Greenpeace flagship "Rainbow Warrior" was bombed by the "action" branch of the French foreign intelligence Services. In an interview, one of the missions participating agents stated that the sinking of the ship was plotted in the Auckland Harbor instead of the open sea, to prevent human casualties. Nevertheless the photographer Fernando Pereira died on the sinking ship.
The ultimate goal of "Opération Satanique" was to prevent Greenpeace interfering on nuclear tests on Moruroa. However, the wake of the bombing and the slowly surfacing scandal a flotilla of private New Zealand yachts sailed to Moruroa to protest against the French tests.
