Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park is part of the George Gill Range in the Northern Territory of Australia. There are walking tracks in and around the canyon.
The region around Kings Canyon is made of two layers of different types of sandstone. The upper layer consists of the very resistant Meerenie sandstone, followed by a layer of much softer Carmichael sandstone. When the erosion of a crack in the Meerenie sandstone reached the Carmichael sandstone, it weathered away much faster underneath the Meerenie sandstone. When this process went on, the Meerenie sandstone broke in bit by bit, thus forming Kings Canyon.
Please be aware that some areas of the canyon are sacred to the Luritja people.
