A 23" by 19" by 16.5" marble bust of Benjamin Franklin created by Horatio Greenough around the year 1840 is located in a niche across from the entrance to the visitors area of the Senate Chamber of the Massachusetts State House. The sculpture is probably modelled after a bust of Franklin by Giuseppi Ceracci. It shows the head and shoulders of Franklin without additional ornamentation. The bust rests on a circular tapered plinth which sits on a 2 foot square by 2 foot tall marble base. The base is inscribed with the name FRANKLIN.
The sculpture was given to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Horatio S. Greenough, the son of the sculptor, in 1898.
