George Kastrioti (1403-1468) is the national hero of Albany. Born in a noble family, as a young has been given as hostage of Turkish sultan and, as a courageous soldier, he obtained the title of Iskander Bey (Prince Alexander), transferred in english Skanderbeg. Later, he joins the sultan's enemies, in order to free his homeland. He won the Ottomans, but his dead stopped the creation of an unitary state.
The basement of the statue is made of travertine from Barco, a place near Rome: the superior part alone is a monolith weighing 7.5 tons. An inscription engraved in 1968 on the front side says:
To / Geoge Kastrioti Skanderbeg / Rome / remembers V centenary of the dead / of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg / fearless defender of west civilization S.P.Q.R (Senate and people of Rome) 1968
