A life-size bronze bust depicts George Washington in military uniform from mid-chest up. The bust is a copy of the famous statue of Washington by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The bust rests on a round 4' high green marble pedestal. The memorial was given to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the school children of Massachusetts in 1932 on the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. On the front of the pedestal is a bronze shield with the inscription:
GEORGE WASHINGTON
BORN AT WAKEFIELD
WESTMORELAND COUNTY
VIRGINIA
DIED AT MOUNT VERNON
VIRGINIA
1732 - 1799
GIVEN BY
THE SCHOOL CHILDREN
OF MASSACHUSETTS
1932
