"Just prior to 1pm the Time Ball ascended the spire. At one o'clock, as the Time Ball began its descent, the gun was fired allowing sailing ships to check and reset their chronometers."
("The first time ball in Australia was installed at Observatory Hill, Sydney and was first dropped on 5th June 1858. The gun was fired from Dawes Point, then later moved to Fort Denison.") ex Fort Scratchley sign for the Nordenfelt Quick Firer replica One O'clock Time gun.
(
visit link) refers to the recent refurbishment of the Time Ball (unaccessed by self).
The replica gun does fire at on o'clock, but I didn't get to see if the ball dropped at the 'same time'.
Best to be seen from near the round-about of Watt Street and Wharf Road to the North.
