The Orlické Mountains are about a 50 km long ridge with an altitude between 1 000 to 1 100 m, extending in the direction southeast-northwest of the Czech-Polish border. The highest peak is the Great Deštná with a height of 1115 meters above sea level. The altitude above sea level reaches less than 500 m only at two points, which are the breakthroughs of the Divoké Orlice river at Cihak and Tiché Orlice at Mladkov. The Orlické Mountains are known as protracted forested mountain ridges, deep and narrow, sometimes with rocky valleys of rivers and streams, bogs, wetlands with rare flora and fauna, memorable old trees, but also distinctive folk architecture. Some spots offer distant panoramic vistas. The most valuable part of the territory is the protected area of the Orlické Mountains since 1969 which extends from Olešnice in the Orlické Mountains to Earth's gate (Zemská brána).

The 3-kilometre Zemská brána nature trail with 22 stops begins at a stone bridge from the beginning of the 20th century, right at the mouth of the valley. Follow the blue trail to get from one end of the Pašerácká lávka (Smugglers’ Footbridge) to the other, and then you can continue on further – to the site of the Lusthaus hunting lodge.

This historic photo depicted the historical Smugglers’ Footbridge from the beginning of the last century. The bridge got its name, as it served as smuggler´s purposes in past.
