Locals formed a group called the Washoe Tribute Group in 2008 to honor Washoe who was the first non-human to learn and use American Sign Language. Washoe lived at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
The Tribute Group worked with the City of Ellensburg, CWU, local businesses and volunteers to develop this park.
The park is located in the historic downtown Ellensburg on East 5th Avenue between North Pearl Street and North Pine Street next to the old Liberty Theater.
Friendship Park's highlight is a bronze statue of Washoe signing the word "friend". There is an informational sign about Washoe, brick pavers, landscaping and benches. The park measures 30' x 60'.
