Since the 13th century, craftsmen in Germany are organized in Guilds. All guilds have traditional Trade Batches, which are often shown at the doors of their workshops. Guild members also have the right to have their batch placed in their headstone.
When visiting the grave of a dear family member, we noticed nearby the grave the grave of a member of the Potsdam Joiner's Guild.
The guild was founded in 1734. It uses the batch as shown on the headstone, while on its flag (right) it uses a more fancy version.
The grave is located at the top part of Potsdam's New Cemetery. |
