UAL Flight was a Bombardier Q400 commuter turbobprop aircraft flown under licence by Colgan Air.
It was scheduled to fly between Newark, New Jersey and Buffalo, NY on the evening of 12 February, 2009.
However, the aircraft encountered a stall situation while on approach into Buffalo International that wasn't initially identified by the crew. When the situation was identified, incorrect recovery procedures were initiated which caused the aircraft to stall and crash into a housed area in Clarence. All personnel on board the aircraft and one person on the ground perished.
The NTSB concluded that there were deficiencies in training that have since been rectified.
The monument was erected by local philanthropist Russell Salvadore as part of his Memorial Park.
