The first thing of note to have happened on this island was the construction of the Thompson Falls Hydroelectric Project. It consists of a pair of dams and a pair of powerhouses, all separate from each other. The park consists of the entire island not occupied by parts of the hydro project and is a joint project of Pennsylvania Power, Montana and the city of Thompson Falls.
A day use park, it has a bridge at either end which were originally built to aid in construction of the hydro project and are now available for the use of pedestrians entering and leaving the park. There are not many facilities in the park, only washrooms, benches and picnic tables, but there is a lot to see.
From various locations in the park one may view both of the dams, a fish ladder at the larger dam, the Clark Fork River and valley, the powerhouses, both bridges and an old substation, now unused.
