Wikpedia tells us that "Woodley is a suburban area of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, in Greater Manchester, North West England. It lies on the east side of the Peak Forest Canal, next to the areas of Bredbury and Romiley. It is on the boundary with Gee Cross, in Tameside.
Historically a part of Cheshire, the name Woodley translates to 'a clearing in the wood', and is named so because the area contains a lot of woodland.
The Peak Forest Canal runs through Woodley and features a long tunnel."

There are two similar signs, both attached to lamp posts at the side of Hyde Road, the main route into the town of Woodley. At this point Hyde Road is passing over Woodley Tunnel on the Peak Forest Canal which is shown at the bottom of the sign.
Further along Hyde Road is St Mark's Anglican Church which together with its lych gate appears at the top of the sign.
