Nothing is known about the artist Jack Bridges. There is a date 1940 on the painting, but that is assumed to refer to the design of the police uniform and motorbike. The artist has several other dated paintings of policemen with dates ranging from the late Victorian to the 1960s.

Obviously the policeman in the foreground has been added to the painting of the Guildhall after the painting of the Guildhall. The painting of the Guildhall was made from across the street, allowing the side of the guildhall and the roof to be visible.

The painting, oil on board, is in the collection of the Essex Police Museum.
