Near the center of Gettysburg is a building that once was the home of Tillie Pierce Alleman, who witnessed the Battle of Gettysburg first hand, including much of the horrors that that battle brought, and wrote an an account of that years later.

The waymark is located at the corner of Baltimore Street and Breckenridge Street - the building is in the southwest corner of that intersection and is next to the Shriver House Museum.

The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most brutal battles ever fought in North America. In the three day battle from July 1 to 3, 1863, more fell here than in any other battle in the U.S. Civil War. Very shortly, in the days leading up to the battle, rumors ran through about the location of one or the other army. The battle began just west of the borough on the first day, then, when the Union Army was routed, the battle came into the town and the Confederates held the town until the end of the battle. The action then shifted south and southeast of the borough on Cemetery Ridge, Big and Little Round Top, and the fields to the west. Finally, the armies marched away, leaving a very changed landscape and shocked people who had to deal with the aftermath.

The book, named, "At Gettysburg, or What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle," by Alleman, is fairly short - about 120 pages in the current printing. However, it is very engaging, and states plainly what she saw during the battle at the age of about 15 years. I won't tell you about what she saw, but she saw perhaps the worst of the horrors of war. Her family fled the town to another house behind Round Top, only to attempt to flee again then return to that location. She met many soldiers, including many of the high officers. She saw the field hospital hastily set up there and helped in the care - and saw plenty of death. It was so much for a young girl to have to behold.

The book is probably available in many locations - I purchased it at the Shriver House Museum. The current printing was copyrighted in 1988, new material in 1987 and reprinted in 1994. The book is printed by Butternut and Blue and Stan Clark Military Books.
