Black Bridge is one of two pedestrian suspension bridges that cross the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. Black Bridge is also used by mule and horse pack teams that bring tourists, supplies, and mail to nearby Phantom Ranch.
Black Bridge was completed in 1928. The opening of Black Bridge allowed for more foot and mule traffic to cross the river. Previously, the only way to cross was on a cableway in a large metal cage large enough for one mule.
Materials for the bridge were carried to the work site by mules; however the one-ton, 550-foot- long suspension cables were carried down on the shoulders of 42 Havasupai tribesmen who walked single file down the trail while carrying the cables.
