George Jones RA was a student at the Royal Academy at the age of 15, and exhibit several paintings. He joined the Royal Montgomery Militia and saw action in several campaigns. After his military service he gained fame and prestige from his paintings of military scenes. In 1822 he became an associate of the Royal Academy, and by 1840 he was keeper of the Academy’s collection.
The painting of the Market Place is oil on panel, and is part of the National Trust collection at Tyntesfield.
