Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.
The Gables is recognisable today, as is French Row. The glimpse of the cathedral to the right is slightly higher in the painting than the now picture. The now picture was limited by the St Albans market which would have obscured the view if taken from further away. The painting is a watercolour, dated 1901, and is in the collection of St Albans Museums.
