Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.
The East side of Market Place is relatively unchanged since either 1890 or 1902. Whilst the painting has 1890 in the title, the painting bears the date 1902. The painting is a watercolour, dated 1902, and is in the collection of St Albans Museums.
