"Windermere is the largest natural lake in England.[1] It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847. It is in the county of Cumbria and entirely within the Lake District National Park." link

The lake is is classified as a public highway and in centuries past supported commercial traffic associated with slate and copper mining, timber, wool and fishing. The fist powered vessel on the lake was a passenger steamer, the Lady of the Lake that started operations in 1845.

There have been many companies operating boats on the lake over the years, but after many mergers and changes of ownership, the current company, Windermere Lake Cruises took over the operation in 1993. link

The highest level of flood by far was in 2009. The 2009 Great Britain and Ireland floods were a weather event that affected parts of Great Britain and Ireland throughout November and into December 2009. November was the wettest month across the United Kingdom since records began in 1914 and had well above average temperatures.[1] The worst affected area in Great Britain was the English county of Cumbria.

Between 18th and 25th November 2009 many properties were flooded in Ambleside, leaving the main road impassable for most vehicles. On Lake Windermere itself approximately 20 boats sank due to the floods. The boats were all moored to a fixed pier, and could not rise with the rising water. link
