In the 9th chapter of Masha Hamilton's novel, The Camel Bookmobile, the main character reflects upon her childhood and her mother's use of the term "starvin' Biafrans" to downplay her children's whining. The only problem is that the children didn't know what starvin' Biafrans were. When the main character, Fi Sweeney, is in high school, she finally learns about Biafrans and does additional research here at the main library in Manhattan.
