Some out-of-state folks think this little fish is California's version of sending people out on a snipe hunt. However, they actually do exist. These small fish lay their eggs in the sand at night during the highest high tides of the month on beaches during the spring through late summer. You can find out more about them and when they spawn at the California Department of Fish & Wildlife's Amazing Grunion page.

This photo cut-out of these popular fish is located in the outdoor walkways of othe museum, just west of the gift shop in a outdoor corner. You put your face where the fish's eye would be. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers programs about the grunion, followed by a beach walk to see them coming ashore, about once or twice a month during the season. Consult the aquarium's event calendar for schedule.
