Much of the land around Skipton was owned and managed by Skipton Castle for many centuries.
Running through Skipton Castle Woods, the stream called Eler Beck has over the years been extensively managed and modified to provide water power to corn mills and a saw mill.
In 1797 a canal was also built next to Eller Beck to provide a connection between the nearby Leeds Liverpool Canal and quarries near to the castle.
This overflow allows excess water from the higher level mill race pound to return to the level of Eller Beck..
There is a footpath that follows the route of the canal and Eller Beck that is easily accessible from Mill Bridge on Raikes Road in the centre of Skipton. At this point the overspill flows into Eller Beck itself.
