DE:
EN:
According to Greek mythology, Ikarus was detained together with his father Daidalos in the labyrinth of the Minotaur in Crete by king Minos. To escape, Daidalos built for both of them wings from feathers and wax. However, Ikarus got wantonly and flied too high - the sun melted the wax, and Ikarus fell into the sea.
This abstract sculpture of Ikarus of the same title was created by artist and professor Simon Benetton in 1993. It is made from iron and measures about 5 metres in height. Dr. Hans Riegel, founder of Haribo, gave it to the city of Bonn as present, which erected it here, in front of the opera of Bonn.
