The Metasequoia is a living fosil. It carries needles, but it is deciduous tree. It was thought to have become extinct in the tertiary period, being known only from fossilised leaf-prints. However, live trees of obviously the same species as that thought extinct were found in Chinese province of Sichuan in 1941. A 1949 US expedition collected seeds in the Shui-sa valley and distrubuted them among the world's leading botanical gardens and universities... Majority of full-grown trees have origin in this first seeds delivery.
