This episode revolves around a dilapidated house, Winyard, in the woods. The house is for sale at the local estate agents, but the estate agent is not trying to sell the house. Instead she is trying to buy the house for a song, in partnership with a local builder.
A house hunting couple discover the house is for sale when they stay at the Feathers hotel. They investigate the house and get garrotted with piano wire in their car. Barnaby investigates.
Barnaby finds that there are several interested parties wanting the house. As well as the estate agent and local builder, there is a local conservationist, and a couple of local historians who are trying to blackmail the estate agent.
The house has been put up for sale by Charlie Magwood, a Londoner who had been evacuated to the cottage and had had it bequeathed by the owners. Checking with the local solicitor he finds that the house was originally bequeathed to Charlie’s twin brother Jack Magwood, but he recently changed ownership in favour of Charlie. When Barnaby questions Charlie it becomes apparent that Jack has been inside for 18 years for killing a policeman and has absconded from open prison with just two weeks left to serve.
Barnaby deduces that there must be something of importance to the Magwoods at the house and searches the chimney. There he finds the revolver that shot the policeman 18 years earlier. Fingerprints show that Jack had hidden the gun, but that Charlie had fired it. Jack was covering for Charlie, who was a bad lot. Barnaby arrests Jack, unknown to Charlie. The estate agent is murdered at the house whilst Jack is in custody. Barnaby reckons Charlie is the murderer and flushes Charlie out by taking Jack back to the house. Charlie tries to strangle Jack whilst Barnaby is out of the room, but Barnaby re-enetrs in time to stop the final murder.
