The postman in Goodman’s Land, Dave Cutler, is found with a slashed throat on the village green. When Barnaby checks out Dave Cutler, he finds that he had many female admirers in the village, and several angry husbands. There are no witnesses to the murder, but there are reports of people hearing faint jazz music from the 1950s.
Before Barnaby gets far with the investigation, Debbie Shortlands is also found murdered. She had been taking Simon Reason’s accounts back to him, but had to take a detour because of the police taped off area. Debbie Shortlands had been having an affair with Dave Cutler and was one of the last people seen by Dave Cutler.
The next person to be murdered is Simon Reason. He had been rung up at 1 am, ostensibly by the police, and told to go back to his furniture shop. When he got to the shop it had been broken in to. Undeterred he went in and was crushed by a falling desk.
Still with no firm leads, Barnaby and Troy set up an incident room in the village hall. They are assisted by WPC Jay Nash, who is fancied by Troy. They do not have long to wait. Owen August is found out on a walk, with his throat cut.
Barnaby widens his search and finds that the local pub has a collection of 1950s tapes. They are collected by the bar man, John Field. Barnaby meets John Field as he is leaving the pub. He asks the landlady to show him Field’s room. There he finds a manuscript for a book called Dark Autumn. He also finds photos of fields late mother in 1950s clothing. Disturbingly there are photos of WPC Nash with the name Tammie written on them. Field is supposed to have a girlfriend called Tammie, but no one has ever seen her. Barnaby now knows Field is the killer and races off to the village hall, just in time to stop Field killing WPC Nash.
